What Does It Mean to Be Addicted to Media?

Obsession, dependency, withdrawal:  these are words we normally associate with substance abuse, not smartphones and social media. But recent news of and public attention to the habit-forming use of video games and social networks, the building of compulsion into digital design, the plague of distracted driving, and technology executives denying their own children screen time, all raise a disturbing and provocative question. It’s a question that exists at the intersection of metaphor and moral panic, scientific research and viral rumour. That is, what does it mean to be addicted to media?

We’ll begin by defining just what we mean by media addiction, and how it might be understood when contrasted with more familiar drug and alcohol addiction. We’ll address the surprisingly long history of the issue and public anxiety about it, both of these dating to the origins of modern media themselves. The talk will then explore what media, technology and psychology researchers tell us about if and how we can be addicted, how this might differently affect children and adults, and what the consequences and remedies might be if so. Particular reference will be made to recent research on the technologies we all know, use and love.

This will be a one-hour illustrated and interactive presentation. Time for questions and discussion will follow the talk.
